Peguche, Ecuador  |   Jose Cotacachi & Family

Jose Cotacachi is the designer and maker of the Wall Hangings that fill the shop.   Jose's interest in weaving started at the young age of 9 years old.  His father introduced him to the practice which was passed down to him from his father and since that day, Jose hasn't stopped.  He has spent the majority of his life weaving, studying design, and elevating his craft in the process.

The preparation of the wool is long and tedious - a process that takes the participation from the whole family to complete.   The wool is sheared from local shepherds, cleaned and washed repeatedly before it is ready for dying.  Jose proudly uses all natural dyes from plants, seeds and fruits to color the wool used in his weavings.  The dyed wool is then loaded on a wooden foot loom and the weaving process begins.

The weaving process can take weeks to complete.  Each Wall hanging has been named after the amount of hours it took to make.

Jose and his family are able to live a comfortable life with a steady income thanks to their weaving business. Their earnings are funding primary as well as higher education for their children and grandchildren.

We're proud to support Jose Cotacachi and his family by funding improvement projects for their workshop.
