EMRE & TEAM | IZMIR, TURKEY
CULTURAL CRAFT
The craft of Peshtemal weaving has been embedded in the Turkish culture for centuries. Traditionally used for privacy in hamams (baths), the Turkish Pesthemal is a useful towel thanks to its fast absorbing properties. Our Peshtemals are hand-woven by a group of Makers in Turkey’s Aegean coast who use traditional crafting techniques that honor their ancestors craft.

PROCESS
Emre is the lead designer who takes inspiration from daily life and nature. Woven on traditional shuttle looms, this group of makers take the time needed to craft Peshtemals that are true to the traditional crafting process their ancestors used before them. Let's take a closer look at the process:
DESIGN
Emre is inspired by everyday items he interacts with on his daily life. From food to the landscape that surrounds him in Izmir, his design patterns are a representation of the small things in life, like pasta. He starts by drawing the design on a piece of paper and making a weaving mold as seen here on the right.
MATERIALS
IMPACT
Emre and his five person team handle every aspect of production in their Atelier. Emre has created a safe working space that provides a steady dignified living for each worker. They're committed to the use of traditional wooden looms - a production process that takes more time than the common mechanical looms that are now the norm.
