JOSÉ COTACACHI AND FAMILY | PEGUCHE, ECUADOR
3RD GENERATION WEAVER
Jose Cotacachi is the designer and maker of the Wall Hangings that fill this shop. Like every son, Jose's interest in weaving started when he was young. He would watch his father spend hours weaving at the loon and dreamed about doing the same one day. Jose has now spent the majority of his life weaving, studying design, and elevating his craft in the process.

PROCESS
The preparation of the wool is long and tedious - a process that takes the participation from the whole family to complete. The wool is sheared from local shepherds, cleaned and washed repeatedly before it is ready for dying. Jose proudly uses all natural dyes from plants, seeds and fruits to color the wool used in his weavings.
WEAVING
Once the dyed wool is dry, it is loaded on a wooden foot loom and the weaving process begins.
Weaving can take weeks to complete. Each Wall hanging has been named after the number of hours it took to make.
IMPACT
José Cotacachi has perfected the craft of weaving. This has made his weavings popular with customers around the world. The income generated from his unique designs has funded education for all of his daughters as well as his grandkids.
